What a contrast between the royal welcome the Messiah received from astrologers, even though they were pagans, and the hostility of the king of Judea who governed his own people! From birth, the Messiah suffers hatred and rejection, even when his people should have been expecting him and rejoicing at his coming.
Thankfully God protects him so his mission can be accomplished. These events lead him to Galilee, a region despised by the Jews, where he will grow up in humble circumstances which set him apart from other kings. He will later say that he “did not come to be served but to serve” (20:28). As we will soon see, he really did spend his life serving, giving his all as a blessing for humanity.
